Protecting Your Floors For The Holidays

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but it’s also one of the most stressful times of the year. Planning gifts, meals, and guests makes it very busy. As well as all that, you have to get your home ready for the festive period.

Your floors are one of the areas that take the most damage over the holidays. There will be meals in the dining room, people moving through the rooms, spilled wine, dropped food, children and pets. This is all par for the course when you’re entertaining.

It doesn’t matter if your floors are carpet or vinyl, there are some steps you can take now to prepare them for the bustle of the holidays.

Carpets

Steam Cleaning

Plush carpets are beautiful in any home, and they really create a cosy, inviting atmosphere. You might be thinking about having yours steam cleaned before the party season really kicks in. You can do this yourself or you can have a professional carpet cleaning company do it for you. If you choose to do it yourself, make sure that you use products that are designed for the type of carpet you have. You should also make sure that you leave plenty of time between cleaning the carpets and the guests arriving. It takes around a week for most types of fibres to dry out completely after being cleaned.

Anti-Stain

When you’ve steam cleaned your carpets, make sure that you apply an anti-stain protective treatment immediately. Again, this is something you can do yourself with the right products. Alternatively, many professional carpet cleaning companies will offer to treat your carpets with an anti-stain treatment at an additional cost.

After The Party Season Ends

If you have reacted efficiently to any mess or spills on your carpets during the party season, there may be very little staining. If you applied an anti-stain, you should notice much less staining as well. If you haven’t then you might need to have the carpets cleaned and treated in the new year.

Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl flooring is stunning, and very resilient which is what makes it a very popular choice for many homeowners. However, even though it is extremely hard-wearing, there are still things you can do to protect it from damage.

Doormats

Doormats are one of the simplest ways to protect your flooring and help keep it clean. Put a rubber backed doormat both inside and outside the entrance doors to your home. The dirt from people’s shoes will be left on the doormats, and not on your beautifully cleaned flooring. Pets can also track dirt and grime in, and most pets aren’t trained to wipe their feet. You could train them to wait by the door until you wipe off their paws with a towel or baby wipe.

Felt Pads

Many people think that you should only protect hardwood floors, but they can protect vinyl floors as well. You can buy stick on felt pads to attach to the bottoms of your dining table legs, chair legs, and sofas. You can find similar items that are designed to protect carpeted floors from the weight of furniture in the room.

Area Rugs

High traffic areas of your home, like the hallways, entryways, kitchen and living rooms, could use a little extra protection, especially during the holiday season. Area rugs can do this. They also can add another layer to the room itself. Look for colours, textures and fabrics that complement the rooms. For the kitchen rug, you should look for something that is absorbent, and padded for extra comfort. You should also place a barrier between the rug, and the flooring.

Mop Spills

It seems like it’s common sense, but you need to mop spills, or clean up tracked in dirt or grime as soon as possible. It’s even a good idea to put together a ‘holiday emergency kit’. Keep things like a roll of paper towel, microfiber cloths, and some good quality floor cleaner in a spray bottle close by. In the event of a spill you can spray it, wipe it and dry it quickly. Also, make sure you sweep your high traffic areas daily, and mop once or twice per week.

If there’s a spill on your carpeted floors, you can use the same emergency kit. Spray the spill with your cleaning solution, and blot it until the moisture has gone.

These steps are easy to do, and can really make a difference to how your floors cope with the festive period. Of course, sometimes, accidents happen, and more severe damage can occur.
